Our Lady of Guadalupe

In the winter of 1531, a poor native Aztec Indian named Juan Diego was walking through the hills outside of Mexico City on his way to Mass. He heard music and a woman’s voice calling his name from a hill named Tepeyac.

He climbed the hill and found a woman who looked to be of his race and dressed in the clothes of his people. She identified herself as Mary and told Juan Diego to tell his bishop to build a shrine on the hill to encourage faithfulness in the people of Mexico City.

The bishop was skeptical and asked for a sign. When Juan Diego gave this message to Mary in a later apparition, he found roses blooming out of season. He gathered them in his tilma, a cloak-like a poncho, and she arranged the flowers and told him to take them to the bishop.

When Juan showed the bishop the roses, they saw that an image of Mary was left upon Juan’s cloak. The bishop was immediately convinced and built a shrine on Tepeyac. Soon, some 8 million people had come to the faith because of Mary’s apparition.

Juan Diego’s tilma was framed and kept in the shrine. It was made of a rough material from cactus and should have decayed within a few decades, but 500 years later is still an object of wonder for millions of pilgrims today.

Our Lady of Guadalupe was declared patroness of the Americas, and, as she is depicted as pregnant with Jesus, she is also patron of the Right to Life movement. (For a short reflection on the placement of this feast during the Advent season, read this essay from theology professor and Guadalupe scholar Maxwell Johnson here.)

This feast day is celebrated on campus with a vibrant Mass in the Basilica led by the Spanish-language student choir. A number of images of Our Lady of Guadalupe are presented on campus--this tapestry above hangs in the Eck Hall of Law Chapel. The painting shown above rests in a side chapel in the Basilica and is used in the Guadalupe Mass. It was painted by Maria Tomasula, professor of painting in the Department of Art, Art History, and Design.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, patron of the Americas and of the Right to Life movement, pray for us!

Names of the Candles on the Advent Wreath

"The celebration of Advent is marked by lighting a candle on each of the four Sundays. On the first Sunday of Advent, the purple Prophecy candle is lit, reminding us that Christ's Coming was revealed to us by God through the prophets.

The purple Bethlehem candle is lit on the second Sunday, in addition to the first purple, offering light and guidance through the bright Star of Bethlehem.

On the third Sunday, the pink (Rose) Shepherd's candle is also lit, bearing the joy and glad tidings of the coming birth.
The final purple candle is added to the lighting ceremony on the fourth Sunday. This is the Angel's candle signifying Christ's presence is near.

Finally on Christmas Day, we light a large white Christ Candle to celebrate His arrival, the Light of the World."

(This description was found on a box of candles from Root Candles, Medina, Ohio 44256 and was found on Names of the Advent Candles.

St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas 12/6/2013

Nicholas is one of the most-loved and venerated saints in our tradition, said to be only second to Mary in depictions by artists. He was bishop of Myra in present-day Turkey in the fourth century, and legends and accounts of his life have been told for ages.

His parents died when he was young and left him with a large inheritance. He resolved to use the money for charitable works and learned of a man who had fallen into poverty. The man had three daughters, but because he could not support them nor provide a dowry for their marriage, he was going to give them over to prostitution.

Nicholas learned of this family’s situation and, under the cover of darkness, tossed a bag of gold through the family’s window. The oldest daughter was soon married. The saint returned and performed the same act of kindness for the second daughter. When he approached to help the youngest daughter, the man was waiting for him and when he recognized Nicholas, he overwhelmed him with gratitude.

After being chosen as bishop of Myra, Nicholas was imprisoned and tortured during the persecutions of Christians during the early fourth century. When the Christian emperor Constantine released Christians from prison, Nicholas returned to Myra, where he confronted pagans and those who distorted the faith among the people in his region.

According to tradition, he attended the Council of Nicea in 325, which articulated the nature and personhood of Jesus as fully human and fully divine. It is said that Nicholas became so infuriated with a famous teacher who distorted the faith that he slapped him in the face.

St. Nicholas was so revered that there was competition for his relics. The reliquary chapel in the Basilica, which holds some relics of St. Nicholas, contains a stained glass image of his relics being transferred to Italy, where they rest today. The top image shows St. Nicholas as bishop and comes from the Snite Museum of Art on campus.

St. Nicholas is patron saint of Russia and Greece, among other nations, and is also patron of children. Catholics in Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands gave presents in his name, from which comes our custom of gift-giving at Christmas.

St. Nicholas, whose generosity has inspired Christians for ages, pray for us!

Advent and Prayer

We all tell ourselves during these special times of the liturgical year, Advent and Lent in particular that we are going to pay more attention to our prayer lives. And then...the busyness of our world and our personal lives gets in the way. Well for some of you that may not be the case but I would hazard to guess that for the majority of us that is the fact, I know it is for me.

This link that you can copy and paste comes from Vibrant Faith and will take you to a devotional book for Advent that is free for a download: http://www.vibrantfaith.org/taking-advent-home.html Why don't you take a few minutes to check it out and you may find that it is something you can use this year. You may have a smart phone with access to the internet, a tablet, an Ipad or even your desktop computer, so for most of us there is not an excuse to at least check it out.

Have a blessed Advent season.

Saint of the Day

November 22 - St. Cecilia, patron saint of musicians

St. Cecilia is one of the most venerated martyrs from early Christianity and is invoked in one of the Eucharistic prayers used in the Mass. She is patron saint of musicians and her relics rest in the reliquary chapel in the Basilica.

We know almost nothing of Cecilia from historical fact, but the account of her life has endured through the ages. A church in her honor was built in Rome on the site of her home, and her body rests there.

Her parents arranged a marriage for her with a man named Valerian, who was not a Christian. It is said that when she heard the music for her wedding, she was singing a hymn of love in her heart for Jesus, to whom she had committed herself as a spouse. It is references such as this that led her to be honored as patron saint of musicians. On their wedding night, Cecilia convinced Valerian of her commitment to God and he converted, requesting to be baptized along with his brother.

Valerian and his brother were both wealthy, and used their fortune to support Christian families who had suffered the loss of a member to martyrdom. Eventually, they were captured and sent to execution. The soldier committed to kill them was converted by their great faith, however, and took them to his house, instead, and asked that his whole family be baptized. The next day, Valerian, his brother and the soldier were all beheaded. Cecilia made sure they were buried properly, and distributed the goods of the households among the poor.

Cecilia herself was captured for preaching the faith and she was condemned to die by suffocation in steam baths, but she remained unhurt in the baths for a day and a half.
It is said that a soldier was sent to behead her, but after the three blows allowed by law, her head was not severed. She appeared incapacitated but peaceful, joyfully awaiting her death and union with Christ. Faithful friends gathered around her and waited with her until she died three days later. She was buried by the pope himself. In 1599, when her body was exhumed, it was found incorrupt. St. Cecilia’s relics rest in the reliquary chapel in the Basilica and she is depicted there in these stained glass windows.

St. Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, pray for us!

Christian Marriage: Gift and Calling

Teams of Our Lady is an international Catholic lay movement, recognized by the Holy See, which began in France in 1939. Teams afford the opportunity for couples to gather in faith, friendship and understanding to support one another in their journey of marriage. It is not marriage enrichment, although it enriches marriages; it is not a support group, although it
provides support and it is not “marriage encounter” although it offers the richness of encountering and sharing with others the challenge of a common
journey.

What is a Team? A Team, commonly five or six couples, meets monthly (the St Olaf Team meets nine months out of the year) alternately at each other’s
home to share a simple meal, share experiences, challenges, joys and frustrations of the preceding month. After the meal, reflection on scripture, shared prayer and discussion on growth experienced in the
ENDEAVORS (Life in Christ).

ENDEAVORS are attitudes to awaken within us the desire for conversion and formation – to bring to fruition the devotion of Mary to God’s call in her life as the center of life and marriage. The Endeavors: regular reading of the Word of God; daily meditation; daily conjugal and family prayer; monthly sit-down; a rule of life and an annual retreat experience helps
keep the call of the Spirit from within being silenced by the external clamor of life.

St Olaf’s has an active Team, meeting since 2004 that
would welcome additional couples. Teams of Our Lady opens the door of opportunity for growth in spiritual life through a program of sharing, prayer and study. The study portion this year is reviewing Rediscovering Catholicism written by Matthew Kelly (gifted to all members of the parish).

Teams of Our Lady meets on the first Sunday of each month from 4:30 PM to 7:30PM. Minor changes occur throughout the year. Dates are adjusted when
necessary so that, as much as possible, all couples are able to attend all gatherings. Each gathering closes with The Magnificat, honoring Mary, Queen of Heaven and Mary, Our Lady, Queen of Teams.

I have the honor to be the clergy representative for Teams of Our Lady at St Olaf’s and have been enriched by their faith, devotion and commitment to
one another since 2005.

Please feel free to contact Tom or Mary Behling; John or Julie Hibbard; Darrell or Renee Liming or myself for additional information.

Saint of the Day - St. Jude Thaddeus

Patron of Desperate Cases

St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St. James the Less, and a relative of Our Saviour. St. Jude was one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus.

Ancient writers tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and assisted at the election of his brother, St. Simeon, as Bishop of Jerusalem.

He is an author of an epistle (letter) to the Churches of the East, particularly the Jewish converts, directed against the heresies of the Simonians, Nicolaites, and Gnostics. This Apostle is said to have suffered martyrdom in Armenia, which was then subject to Persia. The final conversion of the Armenian nation to Christianity did not take place until the third century of our era.

Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the Last Supper why He would not manifest Himself to the whole world after His resurrection. Little else is known of his life. Legend claims that he visited Beirut and Edessa; possibly martyred with St. Simon in Persia.

Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them. Therefore, he is the patron saint of desperate cases and his feast day is October 28. Saint Jude is not the same person as Judas Iscariot who betrayed Our Lord and despaired because of his great sin and lack of trust in God's mercy.

Prayer of Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Here is the translation of the prayer of consecration recited by Pope Francis in consecrating the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Holy Mary Virgin of Fatima, with renewed gratitude for your maternal presence we join our voice to that of all the generations who call you blessed. We celebrate in you the works of God, who never tires of looking down with mercy upon humanity, afflicted with the wound of sin, to heal it and save it. Accept with the benevolence of a Mother the act of consecration that we perform today with confidence, before this image of you that is so dear to us. We are certain that each of us is precious in your eyes and that nothing of all that lives in our hearts is unknown to you. We let ourselves be touched by your most sweet regard and we welcome the consoling caress of your smile. Hold our life in your arms: bless and strengthen every desire for good; revive and nourish faith; sustain and enlighten hope; awaken and animate charity; guide all of us along the path of holiness. Teach us your own preferential love for the little and the poor, for the excluded and the suffering, for sinners and the downhearted: bring everyone under your protection and entrust everyone to your beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus. Amen. [Translation by Joseph Trabbic]

THANKS SO MUCH

For more than twenty five years, the Chippewa Valley Directors of Religious Education have strived to work together to accomplish more than we could through individual or even parish efforts. Any organization needs funds to operate successfully and ours is no different. This year, we have been blessed by generous donations from the Eau Claire Deanery Priests; Catholic Knights, John F. Kennedy Council; and the Deanery Council of Catholic Women. We heartily thank them for their donations to support our goals of providing quality formation for our volunteer catechists and holding a deanery-wide Catholic youth rally in January 2014, among other things.

Check out this one minute video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMITg_W2ldQ Join in a transformative three-week Kindness Challenge starting September 11th! Grow and learn through your own experience by inviting kindness into your life. Watch as the ripples spread around you, to friends, family, and even strangers ultimately creating a better world one kind act at a time. Together we can unleash a revolution of good. Sign up here: www.kindspring.org/21day Through this challenge, you'll receive a daily email with inspiration and ideas. You'll join a vibrant online community of like-minded people from all over the world, and you'll have a chance to share your experiences, read stories of what others are doing, and support each other's journeys along the way. Here is a powerful thought from John O’Donohue. The word kindness has a gentle sound that seems to echo the presence of compassionate goodness. When someone is kind to you, you feel understood and seen. There is no judgment or harsh perception directed toward you. Kindness has gracious eyes; it is not small-minded or competitive; it wants nothing back for itself. Kindness strikes a resonance with the depths of your own heart; it also suggests that your vulnerability, though somehow exposed, is not taken advantage of; rather, it has become an occasion for dignity and empathy. Kindness casts a different light, an evening light that has the depth of color and patience to illuminate what is complex and rich in difference. Despite all the darkness, human hope is based on the instinct that at the deepest level of reality some intimate kindness holds sway. This is the heart of blessing. To believe in blessing is to believe that our being here, our very presence in the world, is itself the first gift, the primal blessing.

June Saint of the Month

St. Marianne Cope, O.S.F. Missionary to the lepers of Molokai, Hawaii

St. Marianne Cope was a born leader. Growing up as one of the older children of a large family, she went to work in a factory right after finishing the eighth grade. She joined the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis a few years later, and began a whirlwind of leadership roles: twice as the novice mistress of her congregation, and three times as the superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse. This leadership, coupled with her sympathy for mankind in general, led her to volunteer to go to Hawaii to take care of the lepers. She was finally stationed in Molokai, where she brought education and happiness to the leper colony: even providing bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women. To read more about this determined and yet charming woman, check out the websites below!

May Saint of the Month, St. Damien de Veuster of Molokai, SS.CC.

Missionary to the lepers of Molokai, Hawaii

St. Damien of Molokai was born in Belgium in 1840 to a poor farmer and his wife. At the age of 13, he quit school to help his parents on the farm; when he was nineteen, he entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Damien's older brother, Pamphile, was also a priest in this congregation, and had offered his service to the care of the lepers on the Island of Molokai. When he fell ill and couldn't go to the mission, Damien volunteered to take his place. The saint offered to stay in the leper colony permanently - he built schools, churches, hospitals and coffins. He was later joined in his work by the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, led by St. Marianne Cope. St. Damien contracted the disease himself, but continued to serve the mission until his death in 1889 .

While serving at the convent, Théodore was asked to lead a small band of missionary sisters to Indiana in the United States of America. When the sisters arrived, there was only a log cabin with a porch that served as a chapel. Though her health was suffering, Théodore fell to this new task with a will. By the time she died in 1856, Mother Théodore had opened schools in Illinois and throughout Indiana. The sisters were well-established and respected. Through illness, poverty and all manner of unwelcoming circumstances, she trusted in God’s providence and lived as a model of belief in his mercy. She was canonized in 2006, and is known as the patron saint of Indianapolis.

4th Sunday of Lent, Year A readings

Since we have a catechumen in the RCIA process this year who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil we will be using the Cycle A readings for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent this year.
Reading 1: 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a; Reading 2Ephesians 5:8-14; The questions are for  the Gospel: John 4:5-42.
"Seeing" is an image for coming to faith.  Name some experience in your life that has led you to a deeper faith.
In the dialogue in the Gospel about why the mans was born blind, there is much made about "whose sin it was."  Do you believe God causes handicaps like this to happen, or does God simply allow them to happen?
In the midst of your own personal struggles, have you ever said, "What did I do to deserve this?'
Of what "blindness" do you wish Christ to heal you?

Jesus addresses the woman's thirst and she is intrigued by His knowledge of her.

March Saint of the Month

St.Katharine Drexel, S.B.S.: School builder and founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People
When she asked Pope Leo XIII to send more missionaries to Wyoming, he asked her, "Why don't you become a missionary?" As a young, wealthy, educated girl from Philadelphia, this was hardly the expected lifestyle for young Katharine Drexel. But raised in a devout family with a deep sympathy for the poor, Katharine gave up everything to become a missionary to the Indians and African Americans. She founded schools in thirteen states for African Americans, forty mission centers and twenty-three rural schools. She also established fifty missions for Indians in sixteen different states. She died at the age of ninety-six and was canonized in the year 2000.
