Feast of St. Stephen

After the death and resurrection of Jesus, the apostles went about preaching the good news. As Christian communities grew, there arose a need to care for widows and the poor in the name of the community. The apostles, being busy with preaching, asked the communities to recommend seven men to serve the poor. Stephen was one of those seven; the apostles laid hands on them and ordained them as the first deacons.
Stephen spoke about the faith with great wisdom and eloquence, and he was successful in winning many to Christianity. Enemies of the Church were angry that he was converting others and they tried to argue with him, but it didn’t work. They then found someone to lie and charge him with blasphemy.
He was taken to face a great assembly, and he remained calm and collected and defended his faith, claiming that Jesus is Son of God and fulfillment of God’s promises. He even scolded his opponents for their refusal to see the truth.
At that, they all became incensed and they dragged him out of the city and stoned him to death. Stephen remained faithful to the end, crying out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” He knelt and begged God to forgive those who were killing him.
St. Paul was among the crowd who opposed Stephen and witnessed his martyrdom. A number of Stephen’s relics rest in the reliquary chapel in the Basilica. His relics also rest in the main altar of the Basilica.
St. Stephen, first to die for his faith in Jesus, pray for us!

December Saint - St. John Neumann, C.Ss.R.

Missionary and 4th bishop of Philadelphia. Founded the first diocesan Catholic school system in U.S.
St. John Neumann learned pretty quickly what it meant to follow God's will with your whole heart and soul. He was certain that he was called to be a priest, but when the time came for ordination, the bishop fell ill and the ordination was cancelled. It was never rescheduled, because there was an over-abundance of priests in Europe. Knowing he was meant to be a priest, John traveled all the way from Bohemia to New York City to be ordained. He was one of only 36 priests, serving 200,000 Catholics: his 'parish' stretched from Lake Ontario throughout Pennsylvania. He became the founder of the first diocesan Catholic School system, going from only two schools to one hundred schools in his diocese. To learn more: http://www.stjohnneumann.org/life.html

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, M.S.C. - November

Francis Xavier Cabrini was born into a family of thirteen children. Due to health reasons, her first request to join a religious community was refused, but she was finally able to take her vows in 1877. Soon after being named prioress of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart, she was urged by Pope Leo XIII to become a missionary in the United States. However, the house that had been promised to her for an orphanage was unavailable when she reached New York City, and the archbishop advised her to return to Italy. Frances departed from the archbishop’s residence all the more determined to stay and establish that orphanage. And she did. In 35 years, Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 6 institutions for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick, and organized schools and adult education classes for formation in the Catholic Faith. She died of malaria in her own Columbus Hospital in Chicago in 1917. She was the first United States Citizen to be canonized, and she is known as the patron saint of immigrants.

Have you ever been accused of being closed-minded or tight-lipped?  Has someone ever suggested that when (s)he was talking with you that it was like talking to a brick wall?
Have you ever been hesitant to speak up?
All of these suggest that you need to have Jesus speak the same words to you.
Do you believe this encounter will make you more open to listen and to speak?

How do you recognize the presence of faith when someone is not afraid?

Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty

O God our Creator, through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.  Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome—for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us—this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
We ask this through Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Fortnight for Freedom

The fourteen days from June 21—the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More—to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “fortnight for freedom”—a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power—St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Dioceses and parishes around the country have scheduled special events that support a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty.

Children: What problems do I need to put into God’s hands?

Key Passage Yet when [the mustard seed] is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade. (Mark 4:32)
Adult: What is the “good soil” that has allowed your faith to grow like the mustard seed and provide shelter for others?
Child: How do you help your faith grow like the mustard seed?

“With many such parables he spoke the word to them as they were able to understand it.”
How many Scriptural parables can you recall?  What about stories with a lesson that either of your parents told you or that you have told others?  What makes these stories/parables easy to understand?  What truths have been conveyed to you by parable?  Does a parable make it easier to accept the truth and therefore make it easier to understand?

Pope advances causes of two possible US saints

During a meeting with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Benedict XVI authorized decrees of “heroic virtue” for a 19th century bishop, the Servants of God Frederic Baraga, the first Bishop of Marquette, and a 20th century religious sister, Miriam Teresa Demjanovich of the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth.
Both will now bear the title “Venerable,” in the place of “Servant of God.” Catholics now have formal approval to pray directly to Bishop Baraga and Sister Miriam Teresa as intercessors before God. Thursday's meeting was also notable for the Pope's action in regard to St. Hildegard of Bingen, a 12-century Benedictine nun and author who has long been venerated as a saint. On Thursday, the Pope formally added her to the Church's roster of saints, extending her liturgical feast throughout the world.
Bishop Alexander K. Sample of Marquette announced on May 10 that he was “thrilled beyond words” by the “significant step” toward the beatification and canonization of his predecessor, Venerable Frederic Baraga. Canonization will require two documented and verified miracles through his intercession. Born in Slovenia during 1797, Baraga came to the U.S. as a missionary to Native Americans in Michigan during 1830. Nicknamed the “snowshoe priest” for his preaching journeys in the Upper Great Lakes, he served as the area's first bishop from 1853 until his death in 1868.
Venerable Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich, the daughter of Eastern Catholic immigrants from Slovakia, was born in 1901 and lived only 26 years. After graduating with high honors as a literature major, she taught and later joined the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in New Jersey.

Adults: Am I willing to open myself to Christ’s guidance so that I can love more genuinely?
Children: Do I realize that Jesus asks me to love my friends and even my enemies, and that he will help me do so?
“It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you” Remember what it felt like to be chosen first? If not, maybe you remember what it felt like as you waited to be chosen. But here in the gospel it is a wonderful feeling to know that you have been chosen, and chosen to do good, to be like Jesus, to love and to be willing to lay down your life. What a feeling to be chosen by someone who loves and whose mercy continues again and again and who has already given his life for you. Can you handle being chosen?

Can you hear him saying this to you?   What feelings do you here in his voice?   For what is he longing?  Do you long for the same thing?

5th Sunday of Lent using Year A - Untie Him and Let Him Go

1st Reading: Ezekiel 37:12 –14; 2nd Reading:  Romans 8:8 –11Gospel: John 11:1– 45
Israel was in exile when Ezekiel spoke this prophecy. In what aspects of your life are you “in exile” from your true self?
God promises to raise the people from their graves and put life and spirit into them. Where has death invaded your life? Where do you most need God’s Spirit to bring you back to life?
We often cling to the large and small losses we experience.  We hold grudges, engage in self-pity, and fail to live fully. Jesus asked Martha if she believed that he was the Resurrection and the life. Do you believe this? How can your faith help you live more abundantly?

Adults: Have there been times in my life when I knew that God’s gift was active in me?  Children: What are some of the ways that God shows his love for me? How can I show God my love?
“people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. …whoever lives the truth comes to the light,….”What do you hide? What are your secrets? What do you not want others to know? Are these evil? What about the things you want people to see, the things you do in the open. Are the things done in front of others good things? What “works may be clearly seen as done in God”? Might that be called evangelization?
